Celia’s Cabin Selected for BBR Films’ November 18 Screening Event in Marietta

Historical film examines race, gender, and justice through the story of an enslaved woman’s resistance to sexual violence.

MARIETTA, Georgia — Celia’s Cabin has been officially selected for BBR Films’ upcoming screening event on November 18, from 6–10 p.m., at Studio Movie Grill in Marietta, Georgia.

Directed by Shay Franklin and written by Leslie Black, Khalimah Gaston, and Anthony R. Page, the film stars Leslie Black, Anna Broadway, and Jarrett Michael Collins. Cinematographer Chris Anthony Hamilton brings the story to the screen through beautifully composed imagery.

The film centers on Celia, an enslaved woman who killed her enslaver after enduring years of sexual violence. Her 1855 trial exposed a devastating injustice: a legal system that held her accountable for resisting violence while denying her protection from it. She was ultimately convicted and executed.

Celia’s story brings questions of race, gender, power, and bodily autonomy into focus. It challenges audiences to consider whose humanity the law recognizes, whose experiences enter the historical record, and whose stories remain overlooked.

“Congratulations to Leslie Black for an extraordinary job pulling this project together and prioritizing a truly dynamic story like Celia’s,” said Anthony R. Page, one of the film’s writers and founder of the Alma Film Festival. “So much of the history we inherit is inaccurate, inauthentic, or incomplete. I’m glad to support projects that help fill those gaps and bring forward a fuller understanding of our humanity—the complexity of our lives, our struggles, and our experiences across generations.”

For the Alma Film Festival, Celia’s Cabin reflects the importance of amplifying stories that confront difficult histories, center voices too often excluded, and create space for meaningful conversation. Bringing these experiences to the screen offers audiences an opportunity to engage with the people behind the historical record and consider how their lives continue to inform the present.

The upcoming screening marks an occasion to recognize Leslie Black and the entire cast and creative team for their work in bringing Celia’s story to audiences.
