This edition of "Ancestral Accents" features dynamic performances by actors from the Studio Blue Acting Conservatory, honoring historical figures who have left an indelible mark on history:
Actress Patrice Hrabowskie will be honoring Ndate Yalla Mbodj and Bessie Coleman.
- Queen Ndate Yalla Mbodj: the final Lingeer (Queen) of Waalo, ruled over a Jolof kingdom situated in what is currently northwest Senegal. Throughout her tenure, she fiercely opposed French colonization and resisted Moorish incursions into her kingdom. Alongside her sister Ndjeumbeut Mbodj, Ndaté Yalla stood as one of the most formidable women in the dynastic history of 19th-century Senegal.
- Bessie Coleman: an early American civil aviator, she made history as the first African-American woman and the first self-identified Native American to obtain a pilot's license. Additionally, she holds the distinction of being the earliest documented Black individual to attain an international pilot's license. On June 15, 1921, she received her license from the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale in France.
- James Baldwin: An American writer and civil rights activist, he gained recognition for his essays, novels, plays, and poems. His novel "Go Tell It on the Mountain," published in 1953, has been hailed as one of the finest works in the English language. His essay collection "Notes of a Native Son," released in 1955, played a significant role in solidifying his position as an advocate for human equality. Baldwin emerged as a prominent public figure and speaker, particularly during the civil rights movement in the United States.
Actress Sahira Parker will be honoring Queen Philippa of Hainaut.
- Queen Philippa of Hainaut: Born in 1310 in Valenciennes, France, she possessed Black Moorish ancestry. She married Edward of York, who ascended to the throne as King Edward III of England shortly before their union in 1328. The establishment of The Queen's College, Oxford, stands as a testament to her honor and influence. Philippa demonstrated astute counsel by advising the King to diversify revenue streams through national commercial expansion. Notably, she played a pivotal role in fostering the textile industry in Norwich by encouraging Flemish weavers to settle there. Additionally, she advocated for the advancement of coal mining in Tynedale, showcasing her commitment to economic development.
Ancestral Accent is family-friendly and great for all ages.
