Global Reckoning: Beyond the Promised Land - A Multidisciplinary Art Exhibition Presented as Part of the Alma Film Festival Experience
Las Terrenas, Dominican Republic — At a moment of profound global movement, reckoning, and redefinition, Global Reckoning: Beyond the Promised Land emerges as a timely and urgent multidisciplinary art exhibition presented as part of the Alma Film Festival experience. Integrated into the festival’s scholarly framework and guided by its Six Pillars of Purpose—Conversation, Connection, Community, Collaboration, Cultural Diplomacy, and Collective Growth—the exhibition deepens Alma’s commitment to critical inquiry, cultural memory, and collective imagination.
Global Reckoning: Beyond the Promised Land interrogates one of the most enduring narratives shaping Black and Brown life across the globe: the idea of the “Promised Land.” Drawing from historical memory, contemporary geopolitical realities, and personal narratives, the exhibition examines migration, displacement, survival, and futurity across the African and Latin American diaspora. It poses urgent questions: What happens when the promised land fails to deliver on its promise? And more importantly, what do we build beyond it?
Rather than positioning the promised land as a fixed destination, the exhibition reframes it as a contested idea—one shaped by colonial histories, forced migration, spiritual longing, and structural inequities that persist across generations. Through visual art, installation, archival intervention, and sound, the exhibition situates Black and Brown experiences within a global context, connecting Africa, the Caribbean, Europe, and the Americas to reveal shared patterns of hope, extraction, resistance, and reimagining.
A Space for Reflection, Dialogue, and Reimagination
Conceived as an immersive and dialogic experience, Global Reckoning moves beyond nostalgia or disillusionment to center agency, memory, and possibility. The works on view trace journeys both physical and psychological, mapping the emotional terrain of migration while foregrounding the creative strategies communities have used to survive, resist, and imagine futures on their own terms.
Aligned with the Alma Film Festival’s research-driven and audience-centered approach, the exhibition functions not as a conclusion but as a conversation—inviting audiences to confront inherited myths, engage in meaningful dialogue, and consider new forms of belonging, home, and liberation authored outside imposed narratives. In this way, Global Reckoning contributes to the broader Alma Experience as a site of cultural diplomacy and collective growth.
A final list of featured visual artists will be forthcoming.
