A Signature Screening & Conversation with Malik Yoba, featuring an episode of his series The Real Estate Mixtape Vol. 1
The Alma Film Festival is honored to present a special screening of the pilot episode of The Real Estate Mixtape Vol. 1, an episodic docu-series written, produced, and directed by three-time NAACP Image Award–winning actor, filmmaker, serial entrepreneur, and emerging real estate developer Malik Yoba.
The series follows Yoba as he pursues his first real estate development deal in New York, documenting the process in real time while opening the door for others to learn alongside him.
Joined by a diverse group of young, aspiring professionals interested in the real estate industry, Yoba offers awareness, access, advocacy, and opportunity within the often opaque world of real estate development—centering education, transparency, and lived experience as tools for empowerment.
The screening is followed by a live, on-site conversation with Malik Yoba, as he discusses how the power of storytelling on film has shaped his work as a community-focused real estate developer, and how narrative continues to inform his latest role as Founder and CEO of Yoba Development.
Best known for a career spanning decades across film, television, and theater, Yoba has consistently used storytelling as a vehicle for cultural reflection and social impact—from his breakout role on New York Undercover to acclaimed performances in Cool Runnings, Empire, Why Did I Get Married?, and numerous stage productions. His work has long centered Black life, complexity, and humanity.
The Real Estate Mixtape series marks a pivotal evolution in that journey.
This educational and cultural docu-series chronicles Yoba’s twenty-year path into real estate development, blending personal narrative, music, and on-the-ground learning. The project demystifies land ownership, financial literacy, and development processes—particularly for communities historically excluded from these conversations—while highlighting models rooted in accountability, equity, and long-term community benefit.
Following the screening, audiences will join Malik for a live conversation exploring the intersections of creativity, ownership, legacy, and responsibility. As part of the activation, Yoba will also record an on-site episode of his new podcast, Meet Me In The Green Room, offering an intimate, unfiltered exchange about growth, reinvention, and building beyond the screen.
This program reflects Alma’s commitment to spotlighting artists who expand their practice beyond traditional lanes—using influence, curiosity, and lived experience to imagine new pathways for collective growth.
