Alma Film Festival Deepens Global South Platform with Nigerian Short Film Showcase Curated by Lesi Nwisagbo

Atlanta, GA — Alma Film Festival is advancing its global cultural platform with a special curation of Nigerian short films by Lesi Nwisagbo, spotlighting one of the world’s most vital and influential storytelling markets.

The showcase will feature short films from Nigerian filmmakers whose work reflects the country’s cultural depth, creative range, and narrative traditions. Home to more than 250 ethnic groups, Nigeria remains one of the most dynamic creative forces in global cinema. The curation will consider films exploring urban life, rural communities, folklore, identity, family, innovation, history, and contemporary Nigerian experience.

Nwisagbo, who will lead the special curation, is an industry advocate with a deep understanding of the Nigerian film landscape and the cultural, regional, and creative forces that shape it. Her perspective brings valuable insight to a showcase designed to reflect the complexity, imagination, and lived realities of Nigerian storytellers.

“Nigeria produces some of the most culturally rich storytelling in the world,” said Lesi Nwisagbo. “This showcase is about expanding the reach of Nigerian filmmakers and creating real infrastructure for a conversation that has been long overdue: who gets to tell African stories.”

The initiative reflects Alma Film Festival’s commitment to the global cultural conversation by creating meaningful opportunities for filmmakers from the Global South to be seen, supported, and connected to new audiences. Through relationships with independent streaming platforms, cultural organizations, universities, media partners, and creative industry leaders, the festival is developing year-round pathways for filmmakers, artists, and creative communities.

Selected Nigerian short films will be considered for featured showcases on Signify TV, Urban Scenes, and other independent streaming platforms, as well as live showcase opportunities in Atlanta and during Alma Film Festival’s flagship event, scheduled for March 12–27, 2027, in Las Terrenas, Dominican Republic. All genres are welcome, including drama, comedy, documentary, experimental work, animation, and folklore-inspired narratives.

“Alma Film Festival is built around pillars of purpose,” said Anthony R. Page, Ecosystem Architect for Alma Film Festival. “We want film to spark conversation, deepen cultural understanding, and make room for stories that resist narrow definitions of place, people, and identity. Nigeria and West Africa represent one of the world’s most prolific and culturally significant creative regions. This curation is an opportunity to engage that work with the seriousness, curiosity, and respect it deserves.”
