Alma Film Festival Establishes the Dr. Cornel West Award for Global Truth & Cultural Conscience

Atlanta, Georgia, USA - Las Terrenas, Dominican Republic — The Alma Film Festival is proud to announce the creation of the Dr. Cornel West Award for Global Truth & Cultural Conscience, a new annual honor recognizing filmmakers whose work embodies moral courage, speaks truth to power, and reflects a deep commitment to community, justice, and the shared hope of humanity.

The award will be presented for the first time during the Alma Film Festival’s closing awards ceremony on Sunday, March 22, 2026, in Las Terrenas, Dominican Republic.

Named in honor of Dr. Cornel West’s enduring legacy as a philosopher, public intellectual, and moral voice, the award celebrates cinema that challenges injustice, elevates human dignity, and engages audiences in meaningful reflection and dialogue. It recognizes filmmakers whose work is rooted not only in artistic excellence but in ethical responsibility, cultural awareness, and a global understanding of interconnected struggles.

“Dr. West has long stood as one of the most important and consistent moral voices of our time,” said Anthony R. Page, Founder and Festival Director of the Alma Film Festival. “Through this award, we honor filmmakers whose work reflects the same clarity, courage, and commitment to truth that he has carried throughout his life. This recognition affirms our belief that cinema can be a force for accountability, empathy, and transformation.”

The Dr. Cornel West Award for Global Truth & Cultural Conscience will become a cornerstone of the festival’s long-term platform, extending beyond a single presentation to include ongoing dialogue, reflection, and engagement through the Alma Film Festival’s broader ecosystem.

In September 2026, the work of the inaugural recipient will be further centered during a special Atlanta experience connected to the Afro-Mosaic Cinema Summit, which brings together scholars, filmmakers, industry leaders, and communities to help shape a global cinematic agenda through town halls, symposia, and critical conversations.

Rooted in Alma’s guiding principles of Conversation, Connection, Community, Collaboration, Cultural Diplomacy, and Collective Growth, the award reinforces the festival’s mission to elevate films that carry both artistic power and social responsibility.

The Alma Film Festival is a next-generation, research-centered, audience-focused, and tech-driven global convening that prioritizes deep engagement, scholarship, and meaningful exchange. Through a growing network of stakeholders across more than 51 cities in 35 countries, the festival is building a platform that connects filmmakers, audiences, and cultural leaders across the Global South and the diaspora.
