Special Screening - Je Suis Noires (Becoming A Black Woman)

Ent-Tech Atlanta begins with cinema—and a question: Who gets to define identity, history, and belonging?

Directed by Rachel M’Bon and co-directed by Juliana Fanjul, Je Suis Noires (Becoming a Black Woman) explores the experiences of Black women in Switzerland through questions of race, womanhood, visibility, and belonging.

The film received Best Documentary at the 2026 Alma Film Festival, where M’Bon became the inaugural recipient of the Dr. Cornel West Award for Global Truth & Cultural Conscience.

Following the screening, Alahna Lark, Executive Director of Signify TV; Dr. Rashana Lydner, Assistant Professor of Africana Studies at Georgia State University; and Tallulah Patricia Bär, founder of AfroSwissters, joining us from Zurich, Switzerland, will take part in a discussion connecting the film’s themes to a global cultural conversation about identity, Black womanhood, representation, and belonging.

Together, they will explore how the meanings and lived experiences of Blackness and Brownness shift across cultures and borders—a nuanced conversation especially meaningful within Georgia State University’s diverse student community.

The film also speaks to a larger cultural movement Alma has observed across the Global South, the African diaspora, and communities around the world: a Renaissance of Reclamation.

It is a movement away from being interpreted by others and toward the power of self-definition. Across film, art, fashion, scholarship, and cultural practice, a new generation is recovering histories obscured by colonialism, challenging inherited narratives, reconnecting with language and tradition, and asserting the right to tell its own stories from within its own cultural frame.

What is emerging is not simply a return to the past, but a reexamination of it—using memory, research, and contemporary creative expression to determine what should be carried forward.

Following the screening, that idea will become the center of a recorded public conversation on the "Renaissance of Reclamation," developed as part of Alma’s ongoing research initiative. The discussion will capture audience responses, cultural interpretations, and lived perspectives, creating a record of how this larger global shift is being understood by the people experiencing and shaping it.

The Alma Experience: Opening Night

The Alma Experience—the festival’s cultural and hospitality platform—opens with an intimate evening hosted at Palate Atlanta Tasting Room, a boutique tasting room in Atlanta’s historic Castleberry Hill neighborhood. The evening will feature curated wine, craft food, and live performance.

Intentionally designed to bring people together across industries, countries, and cultures, the evening creates space for organic conversation, exchange, and new relationships.

The evening will also include tastings of craft wines from regions around the world presented by Behind the Pour, a fashion presentation by Zaccheus Miles, a soulful performance by LyriQ Lashay, and an innovative improv experience by Act A Fool, 

There is also a special boutique theatre performance by Blue Bistro Theatre, featuring the short stage play My Father's Dream, starring Deja Holmes, Talib Henderson, and Sunday Sabbath. The play is directed by Kaylee Jade Warfield and written by Anthony R. Page and S. Denise Couba.
